The reason for the extra character is UTF encoding (probably UTF-8), which uses 2 bytes per character instead of one and is a real pain in the arse.
Can you send me a copy of the html? I'll see of there is anything obvious that springs to mind.

You see this all the time in html emails, especially before a £.

It could be to do with the mail program you are using, encoding to UTF-8. There may be an option somewhere to prevent this.

You need to set the character set, this code should work on most e-mail clients and web browsers.
Code:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">
<html>
<head>
  <meta content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1"
 http-equiv="content-type">
  <title></title>
</head>
<body>
<table>
  <tbody>
    <tr>
      <td colspan="2" align="center"
 valign="middle">- &copy; 2011 MissHybrid.com -</td>

    </tr>
  </tbody>
</table>
</body>
</html>

I solved the problem by typing it ,instead of trying to be clever x
